Omar Enrique Vizquel Gonzalez, Born: April 24, 1967 in Caracas, Venezuela. He attended Francisco Espejo High School in Caracas. At only 10 years old, he helped Venezuela win the Pre-Infantil World Championship in 1977. Omar started his professional career in Venezuela at 17 with Leones del Caracas in 1984, he was drafted by the Seattle Mariners that same year. Omar is one of only 31 players in baseball history to play in Major League games in four decades, and the only one who played shortstop, appearing in 2,968 games over 24 MLB seasons playing with the Mariners (1989-1993), Indians (1994-2004), Giants (2005-2008), Rangers (2009), White Sox (2010-2011) and Blue Jays (2012).

Omar made his MLB debut as Seattle’s opening day starting shortstop on April 3rd, 1989, in Oakland vs the Athletics, he singled off the Athletics Storm Davis on April 6 for his 1st MLB Hit. He hit his 1st MLB Home Run off Toronto’s Jimmy Key on June 23 at Seattle’s Kingdome.

Omar is an 11-Time Gold Glove Award winner at shortstop, winning 9 in a row (1993-2001) and two in (2005-2006), he is a three-time AL All-Star (1998, 1999, 2002). He owns the highest career fielding percentage (.985) all-time among shortstops (Minimum 1,000 games played) and ranks 1st in career games played at SS (2,709). Omar is the all-time leader in double plays turned (1,734). He was inducted to the Cleveland Guardians Hall of Fame in 2014, and to the Latino Hall of Fame in 2015. Omar Vizquel was selected by fans as one of the “Franchise Four” for the Cleveland Indians in 2015. He joined Bob Feller, Tris Speaker, and Jim Thome on this list. Omar directs multiple baseball clinics for kids in his native Venezuela, Miami, Houston and Panama.

Entertained fans with his dazzling defense, leaping throws and bare-handed plays during his 11 seasons in a Cleveland uniform. Acrobatic shortstop won 8 of his 11 Gold Gloves with Cleveland, most in franchise history. The three-time A.L. All-Star and fan favorite helped Cleveland win 6 A.L. Central titles and a pair of A.L. Pennants. He owns the franchise record for most sacrifice flies (62), most sacrifice bunts (334) and ranks among the top 12 in club history in Stolen Bases (2nd), At Bats (5th), Runs (7th), Hits (7th), Doubles (9th), Total Bases (12th) and Games Played (11th). Member of Cleveland’s 100th anniversary starting lineup.
